Our Review of the iPhone 8: What’s the Word in 2021?

Why Buy?

Great camera A11 chip is slightly slower than the new A12
Durable design No Face ID – but has Touch ID
iOS 12 compatible 8 Plus is pretty large
Affordable price

The iPhone 8 is nearly 4 years old – which is just old enough that you might be wondering if it’s even worth buying in 2020.

In short, yes, the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are both definitely worth buying in 2020. They feature many of the modern comforts we expect in an iPhone – a high-quality camera, solid memory, a fast charge time with the lightning port, the option for wireless charging, and compatibility with the latest iOS.

While they don’t sport the highest quality cameras compared to newer iPhone 11 and iPhone XS models, the 8 and 8 Plus (especially) still allow you to capture brilliant high definition photos and videos.

If you can deal with having a slightly older model with more or less the same features and operating system, the iPhone 8 is perfect for you. Starting at just $239.99 for the 8 and $319.99 for the 8 Plus, these phones truly do offer some of the best deals you can find on used iPhones.

iphone 8 review - iphone 8 vs 8 plus features breakdown

iPhone 8 Review: Features Breakdown

Dimensions: How Big Is It?

The iPhone 8 measures 138.4 x 67.3 x 7.3 mm, while the 8 Plus is 158.4 mm x 78.1 mm x 7.5 mm.

It’s .2mm thicker, wider and taller than the iPhone 7 or 7 Plus. It’s so small that you can’t really tell the difference, and phone cases that fit the 7 (and 7 Plus) will also fit the 8 (and 8 Plus).

In comparison to newer iPhone models, the 8 is a bit smaller, while the 8 Plus is the largest iPhone ever made besides the 6 Plus.

About the Operating System: iOS 11

Update for 2021: iOS 11 is far in the past. As of this writing, iOS 14 is the current software: And yes, the iPhone 8 can run iOS 14!

iOS 11 was revealed with the iPhone 8 and included new features never before seen with an iPhone.

The Control Center received a brand new look for iOS 11. As usual, it can be found by swiping up from the bottom of the screen, but the overlay could be customized with new options such as screen recording, low power mode and more.

Camera quality improved and photos take up less space. Apple also improved portrait mode and created live photos for iOS 11.

When you purchase a used iPhone 8 it comes with iOS 11, but is capable of being updated to the latest version of iOS: 12. This allows the 8 to still take on many of the benefits of the new update, such as: screen time feature, grouped notifications, group facetime, and photo search improvements.

Storage: How Much Can it Hold?

The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are available in 64GB or 256GB. For most people, we suggest the 256GB, as that’s more suitable for holding more files, photos, videos, apps, and all the other things you store on your phone. If you want to get the most out of your phone, definitely go with the higher storage option.

Design: A Trip Back in Time

This is the first model since the iPhone 4 with rear glass. It gives it a beautiful, sleek and modern look from the back – but you should definitely put a case on it.

Wireless charging became possible with the iPhone 8. Although it is a bit slow, it’s compatible with any universal Qi wireless charger, meaning you will not have to purchase an Apple-specific charger to use this feature.

Although it looks similar to past generations and a bit dated compared to newer models, it is still a very nice looking phone.

Camera: What’s the Picture Quality Like?

The iPhone 8 changed the smartphone camera game a bit, being the first phone that could shoot 4K video at 60 frames per second (fps) and offers 240fps slow-motion recording at 1080p which is full HD.

The iPhone 8 Plus has a huge upgrade in the camera department compared to the 8 and shares the same telephoto dual camera as the iPhone 7 Plus. It has 2x optical zoom and digital zoom up to 10x. The 8 Plus also has portrait mode, the 8 does not.

Good to note that the iPhone 8 is 10g heavier than the iPhone 7, which is slightly noticeable, but still comfortable in the hand.

Display: What’s the Screen Like?

The screen on the 8 is 4.7 inches, while on the 8 Plus is 5.5 inches. They both use true tone technology which monitors the ambient light around the phone to make the screen to appear perfect under your current lighting conditions. This offers great clarity at all times no matter the conditions.

Aside from that, the 8 Plus also offers a larger screen resolution at 1920 x 1080 with 401 PPI, for a much higher resolution than the 1334 x 750, 326 PPI of the iPhone 8. If you want a high-quality camera that can truly be matched by perfect screen resolution, the 8 Plus has everything you’re looking for.

Audio & Speakers: Sound Quality

One very noticeable difference with the iPhone 8 is the lack of an auxiliary port. This was first absent with the iPhone 7 and was once again absent with the iPhone 8. Although now that we are further along with generations, the lack of the aux port is no longer a shocker.

This means the 8 and 8 Plus are both compatible with (in our opinion) the best invention in headphones history: AirPods. This is highly convenient for anyone who’s interested in wireless talking and listening – which is a big upgrade from wires.

iPhone 8 Pros & Cons

Wireless charging is convenient  The battery lasts much longer in newer models and is comparable to the iPhone 7
Added water resistance Lack of Face ID
Truetone is incredible and the retina screen looks great Large body compared to the screen size
The dual camera, as well as portrait mode on the iPhone 8 Plus, is comparable to the newer X models No dual camera or portrait mode in the iPhone 8
A11 chip is very fast  Older hardware design

Look, the iPhone 8 is not as impressive as the newer models like the iPhone XS, or even the iPhone 11. But, it does hold its weight as one of the best smartphones still on the market today.

What really makes the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus models great in 2020 is that they still have some of the nicest quality cameras for smartphones, and are compatible with iOS 12.

So essentially, if you can get by with used iPhones instead of the newest models, you can get a supported, high-quality phone that’s still relevant for extreme discounts.

Should I Buy an iPhone 8 in 2020? Is it Worth it?

If you like all the features of modern iPhones like the X, XS, and 11, but want to save money on a new phone – the iPhone 8 is best for you.

With wireless charging, iOS 12 compatibility, HDR recordings and portrait mode with the 8 Plus, a long lasting battery life, and a solid HD display – the iPhone 8 offers some of the best value on the used phone market. With a solid battery life to go with it, the 8 is highly reliable, and more or less the same as a newer model phone (camera aside).

Starting at $319.99, you really can’t beat the functionality of the iPhone 8 Plus. If the camera really isn’t that important to you, for only $234.99, you can own a used iPhone 8.

Overall, if you’re someone who cares more about getting the most for your dollar more than having the newest model, this is the perfect solution for you. If you’re looking for something that can deliver the same quality as newer phones cheaper, this is your best bet.

iPhone 8 vs. iPhone 8 Plus: What’s The Difference?

As we’ve described above, although there are many similarities between the 8 and 8 Plus, there are a few obvious differences as well.

The first notable difference is the screen size. The iPhone 8 comes in at 4.7 inches, while the much larger 8 Plus is 5.5 inches.

Both contain the same LED-backlit IPS LCD retina screen, and Apple’s A11 Bionic chipset. The Plus comes in with 3GB of RAM, while the 8 has 2GB.

Both are IP67 water and dust resistant, which protects them in up to 1.5m of water for up to 30 minutes.

One of the biggest differences is the camera. The iPhone 8 has a single 12-megapixel back camera with a wide-angle sensor and f/1.8 aperture, while the iPhone 8 Plus adds a 12-megapixel telephoto camera with f/2.8 aperture.

Another note is that the iPhone 8 contains something that the 8 Plus lacks, which is optical image stabilization. This is helpful for low light photography, but generally, the camera system in the 8 Plus would be considered better.

Is the iPhone 8 the Best Used iPhone in 2021?

If it’s not #1 on your list, it definitely comes in second or third to only the iPhone X and the iPhone XS in terms of affordability and practicality. But even compared to those models, you miss out on a bit of speed in terms of the A11 chip vs. the A12, slight improvements in battery life, and some camera quality. Given that, it’s easy to see why the iPhone 8 Plus is one of the best used phones in 2020 still.

iPhone 8 FAQ: What Else Should I Know?

Looking to know a bit more before deciding on the iPhone 8? Here are the answers to a few more FAQ you might have:

Is the iPhone 8 a good buy?

If you care more about a well-priced and very functional phone than a complete edge to edge display, then this is a great option for you. Multitasking is easy with the iPhone 8, and it is known for being a one-handed device. Processing power is quick, the cameras are great and especially in the 8 Plus, you will be wanting for nothing more.

Which is better, the iPhone 8 or 7?

There was not a huge difference in the release of the iPhone 7 and 8, but the most notable difference is the true tone technology (which makes photos better) and a faster processor. Apple claims the A11 chip is 25%-70% faster in different categories, so all around, the iPhone 8 is a better phone than the iPhone 7.

Do I need to switch SIM cards for the iPhone 8?

There is no difference between the SIM cards used for iPhone 7, to iPhone 8. The only time it might be necessary to switch SIM cards is if you change carriers.

How much does the iPhone 8 cost in 2020?

You can purchase the iPhone 8 from Glyde, starting at $257.99 for the 64GB iPhone 8, and $339.99 for the 64GB iPhone 8 Plus.

Does the iPhone 8 have Face ID?

Unfortunately, one of the missing features of the iPhone 8 is the lack of Face ID, but many users found the Touch ID to be more user-friendly and a better all-around option. This is not one of the features that you should be worried about losing if choosing the iPhone 8 over a newer model.

Bottom Line on the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus

If you’re focused on value, the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are perfect for you. They offer modern iOS 12 compatibility, allow for wireless charging and AirPods connection, have great cameras, and come with the storage you need to save all your information. If you’re looking for something that is just shy of top of the line, a used iPhone 8 Plus is perfect for you.
